Making Room for Jesus in a Full Life
I think we can all identify with Martha. Parents. And children. She is the person I don’t want to admit I am – but I know I am. The new school year brings another layer of responsibilities, expectations and dense schedules added to the challenges we already face.
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-41
Jesus nailed it: We can feel worried and anxious about many things.
But Mary chose the better thing that cannot be taken from her. That statement makes me stop and reflect on all the mental energy I give to try to control life instead of just listening to Jesus in his Word
A Daily Prayer:
Oh Jesus, Thank you for forgiving us for all the times we try to be god of our lives instead of choosing to take some time to listen to you. Help us to find ways as families to deliberately soak in your love and truth in your Word. In your name, Amen
